Social Media – BIG Business

Social media is not just for the local pool cleaning company. Ford, Starbucks and Hewlett Packard all consider social media critical for their success. They are using it for customer service, hiring practices and product design. Social media is hitting their bottom line! Why and how do they do it?

Most people get into social media for one reason: everyone else is doing it. Businesses (small and large) don’t have time for the “cool factor”. They use it to increase relationships which lead to better sales.
I was recently reminded of how big businesses (Fortune 100) use social media. Following my experience with Nordstrom’s customer service, I can say:
I’m a Nordy for Life!
  • Nordstrom – I was tweeting with a colleague at 10:00 PM about Nordstrom’s men’s shoes when Nordstrom sent us a tweet about their upcoming half yearly sale and asking if they can help. They even included a link to their website. Talk about customer service!
  • Ford – Ford uses a humorous sock puppet(Doug) to sell cars! They developed a series of videos with Doug as the spokesperson for the 2012 Ford Focus. Results? 5% of the people who bought the Focus did so because of Doug. Money!                                                                                          See his videos=>  Doug the Puppet
  • Disneyland – What do you do with all of those pictures from your visit to Mickey’s home? Share them! Visitors can upload their pictures to the Disney Facebook page. They even built their own interactive app where you (or your kids) can build your own castle.

Major firms use of Facebook is up 8%. Blogging use is up 5%. In addition, 62% of large companies are usingYouTube. Join in on the conversation!

Scientifically Speaking, of course.
