Are You Committed to Social Media?

The final “C” in social media success is commitment. I tell my clients that if their business is not going to be committed to a social media campaign, don’t even open an account. Being committed to social media means following the previous steps: great content, creativity and consistency.

Beyonce’s song  Put A Ring On It is about commitment. That level of commitment is the same that businesses should have with social media. If you sporadically spend a little money on print marketing, your results will reflect that. If you randomly study for a test, your grades will reflect that.

When I wanted a full commitment with my wife, I asked her to marry me – not just date. How does that translate to digital media?
  • Step 1: Have a Plan – A good running program that’s going to get me to win a race starts with a plan. How often will I run? How long will my runs be? For social media, you’ll decide what platforms to use, frequency and content.
  • Step 2: Execute – Start tweeting (Twitter), posting (Facebook) and joining groups (LinkedIn). It’s easy to say you would like to run a marathon; the next step is running. Really want to be committed? Blog on a regular basis – and tell people about it. Accountability holds your feet to the fire.
  • Step 3: Schedule Time – Famed hair stylist and trainer Thierry Baptiste does social media first thing in the morning. Post information that you discover during the day, AND have a scheduled time that your readers can count on.

You’ll make mistakes, and that’s normal. It’s part of the evolution of your social media education. Consistently post your creative content and you will be on your way to a committed relationship…with social media.

Scientifically Speaking, of course.
